"The current campaign finance law might offer a temporary solution but nothing can constitutionally stop an independently wealthy candidate from spending money on his or her own race. This is true even if we moved toward a partially or publicly funded campaign finance system- the deep pocket candidate can simply opt out. There are no quick fixes to weaknesses in the present law; once we plug one loophole, lawyers will find another one. I know- I'm a lawyer. As long as our federal and state laws allow for the accumulation of extraordinary wealth amidst the most abject poverty in our country, money will find its way into the political system. What voters need to do is to examine the character of the candidates because an unethical one will find ways around the most well crafted legislation" Brian Rudnick, in picture second from right, debating Democratic Party City Council Candidates, from left to right, at-large Candidate Marc Stier and 8th District Candidates Cindy Bass, Irv Ackelsberg and, to Rudnick's right Greg Paulmier.
