Is erstwhile, reform-minded, City Council Candidate Jim Foster launching his own Germantown and Mount Airy newspapers and online so as to have some place to boldly continue expressing his opinions, and at some length?
He has already reneged on his promise to make his website an interactive forum; I am not sanguine about media ownership by an individual or corporation with a political agenda, believing that a community association newspaper like the Chestnut Hill Local with editorial independence engraved in stone is a better model.
Personally, I would like to see our 3000 and growing-member family-owned Weavers Way food coop fill the void left by the demise of the Germantown Courier and Mt. Airy Times Express. The Coop could re-configure its excellent monthly publication "The Shuttle" as a bi-weekly community newspaper serving Northwest Philadelphia, and perhaps with a little bit of Philadelphia Metro pizazz. Editor Jon McGoran certainly knows how to put out a good newspaper and the new "Shuttle" could be a joint enterprise with the East Mount Airy and West Mount Airy Neighbors Associations, G-Town (G for Germantown) Radio and Germantown community groups. Maybe we could even woo former Courier editor Karl Biemuller, staff writer Charing Ball and Photographer Catherine Sayre.
Of course, such a newspaper would likely be biased toward organic, locally grown food, community-based businesses, democracy, social justice, sustainability and world peace. (Did I leave something out?)
I can live with that.

Looks like Foster has already locked Karl up for this project. I got this email forward yesterday:
Germantown Newspapers Inc is a newly formed corporation that will publish replacement newspapers for the Germantown and Mt. Airy Communities. The office will be in Germantown and publication of the print version will be in early April, with the on line version scheduled to start next week.
Please feel free to forward any press releases, news items, announcements, or questions to our editor, Karl Biemuller, at editor@germantownnewspapers.com.

One other question, when did Foster say he would make his website interactive?
I am also curious who the members of the newly formed corporation are?

The AIG executives thought they had their bonuses "locked up" too. I suppose Jim's antique car business is very lucrative for him to start paying salaries on a start-up newspaper. He ran full page ads in the Chestnut Hill Local when he decided to be the fourth person to enter the City Council race, one boldly stating the wrong date of the election! so I don't suppose money's an obstacle...
